Our family has been taking care of the caves for nearly 200 years.
OUR HERITAGE, OUR PEOPLE
For nearly 200 years, our family has cared for the caves at the farm Ægissíða. Today, we continue that tradition as a family-owned business, working to preserve this unique part of Iceland’s heritage and share it with our guests.
The caves are man-made, but no one knows exactly when they were first constructed. For our family, restoring the caves is about more than preserving old structures; it is about keeping their stories alive. Each cave holds a piece of a story passed down through generations. We share tales from our ancestors about mysterious caves, early settlers, and life in Iceland before the Viking Age.
We are committed to sustainable tourism and work closely with the local community, using local guides, products and services wherever possible. We are also incredibly lucky to have a wonderful team. Our staff have strong connections to the local area and a genuine interest in Icelandic history as well as the people and stories that have shaped the region. They are passionate storytellers who truly enjoy welcoming visitors and meeting people from all corners of the world.
By working with local people and businesses, we aim to create experiences that benefit both visitors and the community. Icelandic guests can discover places and stories that may be new even to them, while visitors from abroad can experience Iceland through the people who know it best.
The restoration project is carried out under the supervision of the Cultural Heritage Agency of Iceland. Our long-term goal is to continue restoring the caves, open more of them to the public, and ensure that this remarkable part of local history can be experienced for generations to come.
ALL THANKS TO GRANDPA
Behind the project today is a family of siblings, together with one of their daughters and her husband. But the story goes back another generation.
The siblings’ father was actively involved during his lifetime, and their grandfather was the one who first sparked the family’s passion for the caves. He passed down his knowledge, stories, and curiosity about the past, and inspired the family to share this heritage with visitors.
Today, that passion lives on in our team. Together, we share the history and stories of the caves in an engaging, entertaining, and informative way. Our team is made up entirely of local people with strong ties to the surrounding area. They bring their own knowledge, and personal connection to the place to every visit.
