○ How long do the tours last?
The tours last 60-75 minutes.
○ What is included in the Family package?
Guided tour for 2 adults and 2 children (age 6-15 years old)
○ How cold is it in the caves? How shall we dress?
The caves maintain a temperature of ca 4°C (39°F) year-round. Dress for the weather, as some walking outside is required between caves.
○ Is special footwear required?
No special shoes are needed for the caves. However, during winter, we recommend sturdy boots for snow or icy conditions.
○ Do we have to drive to the caves?
No. The tours are entirely walking, so no driving is required.
○ How long is the walk?
Very short, less than 600 m (0,4 mile).
○ Can I take photos? With flash?
Yes, take a lot of pictures and be sure to share them as widely as possible. You can use flash.
○ Is the parking free?
Yes! Parking is free. 😊
○ Where is the meeting point?
You meet our local guide at the reception, where the tour begins.
○ Do I have to book in advance?
No advanced booking is required but you are welcome to do so on the website. Tickets can be purchased directly at the reception before the tour.
○ Can I see the caves without a guide?
No. The caves are protected monuments, so all visitors must join a guided tour.
○ Are the caves wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, no. Some of the caves have steps and narrow passages, which also makes strollers difficult.
○ Are these ice caves or lava caves?
No. These are ancient man-made caves, carved into sandstone and tuff, with a variety of geological layers.
○ Can we book a private tour?
Yes! Private tours can be booked in advance via our website or email ([email protected]). We do offer two types of private tours:
- Classic private tour with a local guide
- Luxury tour – a classic tour with tasting of local delicacies
○ Are there ghosts or fairies in the caves
Some have been spotted; you’ll have to come yourself to find out.
○ How far are the caves from Reykjavík and Vík?
We are ideally located right next the ring road, halfway between Reykjavík and Vík, approximately 100 km in each direction.
○ Is this a private land?
Yes, our family has been taking care of the caves for nearly 200 years. The caves are protected monuments, and the restoration project is under the supervision of the Cultural Heritage Agency of Iceland.
○ Is this a family-owned company?
Yes, we opened four caves to the public at the end of the year 2019. The family is committed to restoring the caves and keep the history alive. In 2024 we opened the fifth cave.
○ Can we write on the building?
Yes, grab a pen at the reception! The caves have wall carvings with names, initials and drawings, and now we invite our guests to write their names according to the old Icelandic custom in our guest book…which is the reception house. Make your mark!
